Recently designated a Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Center of Excellence, the ARA Theranostics Center brings expertise in molecular radiology to patients throughout Central Texas and beyond.

(AUSTIN, Texas) Sept. 13, 2022 – ARA Diagnostic Imaging, a leading radiology practice in Central Texas, announced certification of its ARA Theranostics Center as a Center of Excellence in Radiopharmaceutical Therapy by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI). The ARA Theranostics Center services include prostate membrane specific antigen (PSMA) based therapy (Pluvicto) for prostate cancer and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) (Lutathera) for neuroendocrine tumors. Since its opening in August 2021, many patients have been referred to the ARA Theranostics Center, some from across the country, for its highly specialized therapies.

“ARA has a 50+ year legacy of using radiopharmaceuticals to image and treat disease, starting with the use of I-131 radioiodine in the 1960s to image and treat thyroid disease,” said Dr. Gregory Connor, President of ARA Diagnostic Imaging. “And our dedicated theranostics center allows us to offer the latest radiopharmaceuticals for imaging and treatment as they become available to ensure the best possible care for our patients.”

ARA Diagnostic Imaging is a Radiology Partners (RP) practice, the largest radiology practice in the U.S. Dr. Connor serves as a member of RP’s Board of Directors.

“The ARA Theranostics Center is an excellent example of how clinical innovation and local practice leadership elevates patient care locally, regionally and nationally,” said Dr. Krishna Nallamshetty, RP’s Chief Medical Officer. “The ARA team is able to extend its reach beyond Central Texas and leverage the scale of RP to expand access to these treatments for patients through innovation, collaboration and education among our network of 3,000 radiologist colleagues.”

Theranostics is a specialized field of medicine dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of disease using targeted radioactive compounds called radiopharmaceuticals. Different radiopharmaceuticals target different types of diseased tissues. The radiopharmaceuticals are typically infused into the bloodstream, where they seek out and attach to the targeted diseased tissue everywhere in the body. Once the radiopharmaceuticals have attached to the diseased tissue, they can either be used to identify the tissue through imaging or eliminate the tissue by delivering a minute amount of radiation directly to the diseased cells. This approach minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissues.

All treatments offered through the ARA Theranostics Center are FDA-approved. Most are covered by Medicare and many insurance groups. The ARA Theranostics Center is located at ARA Midtown.
