These are images of a patient with heterogeneously dense breasts who was recommended for a supplemental screening breast US.

Comparison of current and prior-year screening mammograms used for Rad to Rad learning.

The patient was found to have a new “non-mass” lesion in the right 2:00 axis which was recommended for biopsy. It was DCIS, stage 0 breast cancer. It appeared as a serpiginous, hypoechoic structure.

Medical imaging featuring Rad to Rad Learning, showing three ultrasound scans of breast tissue with a corresponding mammogram on the right.

    • New terminology added to 2025 BI-RADS.
    • Can be identified as distinctly different from normal tissue, seen in 3 dimensions but lacks the discrete margination of a mass and cannot be assigned a specific shape.
    • Often subtle and may be detected only because the background tissue is disrupted. If it is a new or isolated finding, it may be considered suspicious.

Bell iconTakeaway: New ultrasound descriptor that could correlate with benign and malignant findings.
