We sat down with Dr. Foxman to learn more about his aspirations for RP’s Office of the CMO and his new role as ACMO of Clinical Operations for the East.

Tell us about your tenure/history with RP.

My practice has been part of RP since December 2020, so we are relatively new to the larger RP team. However, to put this in perspective, in October 2021, I attended my first national practice-wide meeting where I thought I would be one of the “new guys in the room.” In a way I was, but I was struck by RP Chairman and CEO Rich Whitney’s opening remarks at our meeting, when he shared that around 50% of RP teammates had joined the practice within the past two years, during the COVID-19 pandemic. That momentum of others joining RP was reflected in the energy in the room, too.

What attracts you to RP?

In residency, I knew I wanted to join a practice with a strong sense of ownership and dedication. In my mind, this means a group culture that understands they “own” the total care of the patient, and by extension, they are always driven to improve themselves and their practice to deliver great patient care. I know this is in the DNA of many practices around the country. My own experience in my local practice was that to achieve our goals, we naturally joined forces with other local practices and our group expanded. As we became larger, we simultaneously were able to achieve synergies – more sub-specialization, broader quality initiatives and standardization, deeper IT capabilities, greater flexibility in life-work balance, etc. As we grew, we told ourselves we wanted to keep the heart and soul of a smaller, locally dedicated group but with the resources of larger, empowered team. This approach worked well for us, and so it’s natural to be part of a national team that is supercharging this best-of-both-worlds approach by creating a practice that embodies the best of both a local group and a national group. That is the heart of RP’s “One Practice, Locally Led” practice principle.

How has your experience prepared you for your role as ACMO of Clinical Operations for the East?

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities given to me by my local practice and the confidence my colleagues have placed in me during my career. Even as a junior member of my practice, I was given the chance to join serve on practice and hospital committees and learn from those who had built our practice. Since then, I’ve served as chair at two of our hospitals, I’ve been on our practice board for more than 15 years, and I’ve been president of our group since 2010. Our practice includes smaller community hospitals, tertiary medical centers with academic programs, multiple imaging centers, operations in multiple states and teleradiologists around the country. The advice, counsel and even goodhearted critique from my partners plus conversations with radiologists around the country – these are the experiences that I hope will help me serve as one of RP’s ACMOs.

What do you want to accomplish in your role as ACMO?

I’m very new to the ACMO position. In fact, it officially doesn’t start until this summer. So, my first instinct is to be in listening mode and learn from individuals throughout the East division about our shared challenges and opportunities. I want be part of the team that offers solutions and tools to empower our practices in the pursuit of clinical excellence and operational efficiency. These resources should enhance the on-the-ground effectiveness of individual practices and simultaneously support RP-wide initiatives to further build the foundation our national practice. Our mission is to transform radiology, and it will be gratifying to continue to guide the East division towards this mission.

What does radiology look like in the future?

I’m optimistic about the future of radiology. I believe that we’ll see radiologists build incredibly capable teams across the country that will enhance our profession and take patient care to new levels. Those teams will drive innovation in radiology, and the best and the brightest new graduates will choose to join those teams.

I’m excited about the culture, the people and scale of operations that we have at RP. We have the all the right pieces of the puzzle in place to be at the cutting edge of transforming radiology.

Dr. Ethan Foxman will be the Associate Chief Medical Officer of Clinical Operations for the East at Radiology Partners, a leading physician-led and physician-owned radiology practice in the U.S. For more from RP, follow along our blog and on TwitterLinkedInInstagram and YouTube.
