Radiology practices continue to recognize the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in medicine, but recruiting a diverse physician workforce can be a challenge—particularly as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) medical students often choose other specialties. In our latest webinar, “RP Presents: Representation in Radiology – Our Diverse Future,” an expert panel discussed their personal paths that led to radiology and offered important insights for rising physicians to consider when choosing a specialty.
The discussion was moderated by Dr. Andrea Birch, a diagnostic radiologist, Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology and Radiological Sciences at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion for Vanderbilt University Medical Center; and featured four outstanding panelists: Tina Chatterjee, a medical student and President of the Radiology Interest Group at Meharry Medical College, co-leader of the Annual American College of Radiology (ACR) Medical Student Symposium and PIER Scholar for the ACR; Dr. Andrea Nicole Cole, a breast imaging radiologist, Practice President for Radiology Partners Georgia, Medical Director of the Piedmont Columbus Regional Breast Care Center and Chair of Diagnostic Radiology at Piedmont Columbus Regional; Dr. Anthony (Tony) Disher, a breast imaging radiologist with Radiology Alliance in Nashville and past Chair of the Department of Radiology at Meharry Medical College; and Dr. Marta Hernanz-Schulman, a pediatric radiologist, Professor of Radiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Medical Director of Diagnostic Radiology and Chief of Pediatric Radiology at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
Case presentation provided by Dr. Dana Bonaminio, RP National Subspecialty Lead for Women’s Imaging.
