Radiology Partners Research Institute Awards Five New Research Grants

(EL SEGUNDO, Calif.) May 16, 2019 – Radiology Partners Research Institute (RPRI), a research affiliation between Radiology Partners (RP) and leading academic medical institutions, today announced the funding for five research grants. These grants help further RPRI’s mission to advance the specialty of radiology and focus on ways radiologists can use medical imaging to enhance value for patients, providers, hospitals and payers.

The research programs were selected by a review committee led by RPRI leadership, including Dr. Eric Rohren, chair of radiology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, and Dr. Jay Bronner, chief medical officer of Radiology Partners. Each awardee will receive $20,000 to support their project.

RPRI awarded the following grants:

• Columbus Radiology: Evaluation of overutilization of single-view chest radiography in the emergency department

• Duke University: Artificial Intelligence for automatic assessment of TIRADS features

• University of South Florida: 3D printing of pancreatic tumors for surgical planning and patient education

• Southwest Diagnostic Imaging: Machine learning in mammography; training to identify interval cancers with earlier diagnosis

• University of Chicago: Virtual radiology-facilitated distribution of educational material and incentive rewards for decreasing missed outpatient MRI appointments

“We are extremely proud of the work being done through the RPRI research grants and were impressed by the strategic value of the programs we evaluated,” said Dr. Bronner. “When we started RPRI, we envisioned accelerating our ability to transform radiology through research and innovative programs. In just over a year, we have had the opportunity to collaborate with leading institutions on academic pursuits and apply many of the lessons learned to our daily practice.”

The RPRI review board used a scoring system derived from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to evaluate applications. The evaluation looked at impact on mission, significance, innovation, feasibility and collaboration. The RPRI review committee prioritized projects that were clinically focused, research-based, and quality- or education-centric.

Additionally, one project will be presented to the RPRI education committee as an opportunity for residents to collaborate with an attending in support of the educational mission of RPRI.
