Not only is Dr. Arlene Richardson a radiologist at RP Chicago and chair of the radiology department at Jackson Park Hospital in Chicago, but she is also the director of Tanzania’s RAD-AID International program. RAD-AID is a nonprofit (501c3) organization with the mission of increasing and improving radiology and medical imaging for medically underserved regions by delivering clinical support and radiology education to healthcare workers in these areas. Dr. Richardson has been involved in RAD-AID efforts both in Tanzania and at home in Chicago. In 2022, she traveled to Tanzania for her work, and she virtually brought us along for the trip.

Dr. Heather Tauschek of Alaska Radiology Associates leads a team that partners with both urban and rural healthcare facilities to provide subspecialty and interventional radiology services across the entire state. Many communities in Alaska are only accessible by boat or small airplane, while trips to larger towns with access to healthcare can take upwards of 10 hours or more, often requiring overnight stays. The limited road systems create a barrier for rural populations to access routine healthcare services. So, with few radiologists and technologists covering such a large region, Dr. Tauschek’s team goes the extra mile, taking unique approaches to meet patients where they are.

Annually in October, Dr. Andrea Nicole Cole, RP Georgia breast radiologist and practice president, plans the Piedmont Columbus Regional Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon in Columbus, Georgia. The luncheon’s success allows for her team to raise funds for advanced diagnostic tools for the John B. Amos Cancer Center and the renovation and relocation of their breast care center there, where they treat 13,000 patients every year. Marking 10 years of RP’s sponsorship of the event, Dr. Cole invited us to join the 1,300+ attendees at the 2022 luncheon. This year’s proceeds funded Pink Ribbon Comfort Bags for recently-diagnosed breast cancer patients.

Recently, RP Matrix launched the Women in Matrix committee. As the internal teleradiology practice of Radiology Partners, RP Matrix works to promote inclusion, flexibility and support to allow remote radiologists to pursue their goals and interests while excelling in both their professional and personal realms. The Women in Matrix committee helps to emphasize that. “Our mission is to provide solidarity, camaraderie and mentorship to female radiologists within RP Matrix,” explained Dr. Kimberly Marlowe, diagnostic radiologist and committee founder and chair. The Women in Matrix committee believes it’s important to create space to discuss the issues women can face in healthcare and in society, not just within their committee. They are planning all-inclusive gatherings with the entire practice to explore these issues, and they are hosting committee meetings to promote honest discussion and offer women the option to participate in peer mentorship.
